Change has to happen now!!!

Updated: Jun 17, 2020

As I sit here and think what to write I cant help but feel shame. A black American man George Floyd was killed by a Minneapolis police officer on the 25th May 2020. The fact that I even have to stipulate that the deceased was of black ethnicity is horrifying, but none the less is what fueled the white police officer to continue to kneel on Mr Floyd’s neck for almost eight and half minutes whilst the man repeatedly said he couldn’t breath, and begged for his life as he lost consciousness. He was arrested on forgery claims that later turned out to be false. Enraging America and the rest of he world even more when they heard that the officer responsible wasn’t going to be charged with murder as there was not enough evidence to do so, although there was video evidence??!!!! the officer at that time was just stood down from his role waiting further investigation. This man died for nothing, he did not resist arrest, he was no threat to any of the officers, he was unarmed yet such brutal force was taken resulting in him loosing his life!!! He was a father and now his child grows up without a dad all because a police office denied basic human rights and treatment. This sparked riots and a huge call for justice from the locals and anyone else who had been affected by this horrible murder in broad daylight in the middle of the city. Days later the city of Minnesota along with Los Angeles and other surrounding cities have broken out in fire from the angry protesters saying that it is not enough that the police office was later charged with third degree murder and manslaughter but also the other three officers that were holding George down were also responsible and needed to be brought to justice. I agree in any other case if you helped someone in any way who was involved in a murder you would be classed as an accessory to that murder and also charged. so why not in this case?? just because they are officers? they weren’t the ones physically on his neck?, no but they could of done something to stop the officer crushing his neck and they could of saved an innocent man’s life. Tragic and quite frankly something that they will now have to live with. I think multiple people here are responsible for how that day played out and no matter how we go forward now George Floyd will never be alive again. His daughter will grow up wondering where her daddy is and why he was taken from her, what he did wrong, which was absolutely nothing. So as sad as it is that this man lost his life, how many more do we have to lose before something is actually done to change racism not only in the U.S but world wide. Let’s honour Mr Floyd’s death and make it a moment in history that changed the future for better because at the end of the day all we can do is look for the light and hope and fight for the change. If we all do a little bit that adds up to a big bit. How can you add to this, how can you make a change? how can you spread the message? things have to change now!!! R.I.P George Floyd may you find peace and justice be served. Dee x
